I luften: Nyenkelheten

Allt går i cirklar.

Absolut.

  1. A burgeoning middle class is poised to dramatically increase consumer spending over the next few years, and local factories are striving to cash in on this explosive growth. Annual shoe production for the domestic market is expected to skyrocket to 4 billion pairs by 2010, from just over 3 billion pairs last year. 9:45 a.m.: We arrive at the C.T.N. factory, which is about an hour away from our hotel. The factory, founded in 1989, employs 1,000 workers and makes footwear for GBMI, christian louboutin and Tsubo, among others. The GBMI influence is everywhere here – from its code of conduct to the personalized plaques that Killick Datta has awarded to the factory over the years. 2:00 p.m.: After another hour-long drive, we make it to our next stop, Pao Lai. Noticeably larger than C.T.N., the factory employs about 1,700 workers and is currently making christian louboutin shoes for L.L. Bean, Somethin’ Else by Skechers, Acorn and Cabelas, among others. Pao Lai specializes in winter boots and closed-toe styles, but it is trying to diversify into more summer looks. 2:30 p.m.: Our tour guide is Joanne Ko, Pao Lai factory’s assistant manager for research and development. Ko is originally from Hong Kong, and landed at Pao Lai two years ago after attending a university in Australia. While she never planned to enter the footwear business, Ko is a quick learner and sharp businesswoman. Today, she is in the midst of negotiations with Atsco, which is hoping to bring some business to the factory. 3:15 p.m.: Ko is well aware of the challenges facing Chinese christian louboutin manufacturers. I ask her about the power outages that have become all too common in area factories. She says the problems are very serious, especially in the summer.

  2. Danish brand Manolo blahnik, which opened its first factory in the country’s Fujian province last April, will scrap plans to open additional production facilities there if the tariff regulations are approved this fall, according to COO Mikael Thinghuus. Manolo blahnik, which has been seeing strong growth, has the capacity to produce about 1 million pairs of christian louboutin shoes in China – and had been prepping to add enough space to accommodate up to 5 million pairs per year, Thinghuus said. “We have spent a lot of time on logistics and planning in China. … It might have all been a waste of time,” he said. Thinghuus said the issue is particularly frustrating for christian louboutin given that the company owns, manages and operates all of its factories, including its Chinese operations. “We’re not dumping anything. This is 100 percent politics.” Indeed, several factory owners confirmed that younger Chinese men and women are now opting for jobs in other industries. The average age of workers in most christian louboutin shoes factories is now 29 or 30, a notable shift from a few years ago, when most workers were in their early- to mid-twenties. “There are now alternatives to christian louboutin shoes factory jobs that were not there before,” said Evenson. “Better hours, wages and working conditions are helping some factories recruit and keep workers, but eventually, we will have to move at least some of the work to lower-labor-cost areas up north and west.”
